After training in traditional papermaking in Ayabe, Kyoto—the birthplace of Kurotani washi—
Wataru Hatano began creating works using handmade washi as his primary medium.

Driven by a desire to share the beauty of washi with a wider audience,
he produces both art and craft,
while also exploring its applications in interior spaces.

Wataru Hatano’s new work, “RYOIKI,” explores the subtle boundaries that once existed naturally within the Japanese sensibility — the awareness of one’s own realm and that of others. As modern life has become increasingly rationalized, this sensitivity has gradually faded. Precisely because we live in such a time, Hatano expresses through his work the territory within — a space for introspection and dialogue with oneself — as well as the territory between, the quiet margin we leave for those who bring meaning into our lives.
