DENSHIRO
Material : Cherry bark
Area : Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture, Japan
Since its founding in the late Edo period, Kakunodate Denshiro has upheld the spirit of "refining quality and building trust" while continuing the art of kabazaiku, working with the richly textured bark of wild cherry trees.
Kabazaiku is a traditional woodworking craft unique to Kakunodate, where tea canisters are crafted using a technique called katamono, in which thin wood and mountain cherry bark are wrapped around a cylindrical mold.
The airtight seal, achieved by cutting a single cylinder into parts for the body and lid, preserves tea leaves from moisture. With daily use, the bark develops a deep luster, creating a timeless piece meant to be cherished for generations.
Denshiro's dedication to preserving their craft reflects a commitment to safeguarding this heritage and passing the traditions of their predecessors to future generations.
