Manabu Kachi
Area:Date, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan
Material:Pottery clay
Manabu Kachi has recently established new wood-fired and coal-fired kilns in a location surrounded by the beautiful forests of Hokkaido.
“Firing pottery firmly is the most important thing,” he often says.
True to this philosophy, Kachi’s vessels are robust, highly practical, and well-suited for daily use.
At the same time, his recent explorations in open-fire pottery—doki—feature soft, primitive forms. By experimenting with techniques such as using coal in place of glaze, he continues to push the boundaries of expression in his work.
