These cups and saucers were created by Mr. Murakami for Zelcova Coffee in Ukiha, Fukuoka.
While their color palette resembles that of the Hōin glaze, the intention is distinct:
Hōin is designed specifically to heighten the natural sweetness of tea, whereas this coffee-specific glaze is formulated to refine unwanted bitterness while allowing the coffee’s characteristic acidity to remain and shine through.

This piece is characterized by its dynamic, unique appearance, created during firing, a process known as yohen. The marks left on the base, known as tsumeyaki, are made by small clay bits added during firing to prevent the piece from sticking to the kiln shelf. Its weathered, antique-like wabi-sabi aesthetic evokes a sense of nostalgia.

  • Each piece is handmade, so there may be slight variations in color, shape, and size from the photos. We hope you enjoy these differences as part of the unique character of each item.
