After training in traditional papermaking in Ayabe, Kyoto—the birthplace of Kurotani washi—Wataru Hatano began creating works centered around washi. Driven by a desire to share the beauty of washi with more people, he produces both art and craft pieces while also exploring its applications in interior spaces.

Hatano’s signature work, The accumulation of time, embodies the beauty that emerges through accumulation. Hand-pulled washi, earth, and pigments are built up in delicate layers, creating a textured surface that casts gentle, harmonious shadows. His pieces express the quiet elegance that only time can reveal.
