Area:Ayabe, Kyoto Prefecture
Material:Japanese paper, soil, pigment
Dimensions : approx. W550× H1060mm

After training in traditional papermaking in Ayabe, Kyoto—the birthplace of Kurotani washi—Wataru Hatano began creating works centered around washi. Driven by a desire to share the beauty of washi with more people, he produces both art and craft pieces while also exploring its applications in interior spaces.

His latest work, Domain, reflects on the shifting sensibilities of the Japanese people. Once, it was natural to be aware of the boundaries between oneself and others. Yet, as life has become more rationalized, that awareness has faded. In response to this era, Hatano expresses through his work the space for introspection, the quiet margins that allow for dialogue with oneself, and the openness that welcomes those who bring something into our lives.
