The lacquerware of Akihiko Sugita is inspired by the quiet presence of weathered walls and stone pavements that have stood the test of time.

By reconstructing traditional techniques through his unique sensibility and applying layer upon layer of lacquer, he creates an original texture that embodies both the inherent strength of the material and the joy of watching it "grow" and evolve with use.

While these works blend seamlessly into modern life, they possess a dignified aura reminiscent of classical antiquities.

This four-tiered Jubako is a piece that stays close to daily life—one that Sugita-san himself uses regularly with his own family.

While the Jubako is traditionally synonymous with New Year’s festivities, this piece invites the user’s imagination to flourish. It can be adapted to any occasion: reduced to fewer tiers as a refined confectionery vessel for a tea gathering, or used as individual tiers to serve as bold, standalone bowls for social gatherings.

As each piece is individually handcrafted from natural wood, there may be slight variations in size, shape, color, and the delicate expression of the lacquer compared to the photographs. We hope you will cherish these nuances as the unique character and "life" of the Utsuwa.

After use, we recommend washing gently with lukewarm water. For oily foods, please use a small amount of mild dish soap and a soft sponge, caressing the surface rather than scrubbing. As a moderate amount of natural oil helps maintain the water resistance and luster of the lacquer, rinsing quickly with warm water is often sufficient for daily care.

To prevent the lacquer from peeling, please avoid soaking the piece in water. Do not leave it in a basin or with water inside for extended periods. After washing, please wipe away any moisture with a soft cloth on the same day before storing.
