Gaku Nakane Cracked Earth Dish
Number: C02045
Artist: Gaku Nakane (Hgashiomi, Shiga Prefecture)
Material: Pottery clay
Size: Approx. Φ55~58 × H95~105 mm
"When the water drains from a rice paddy and the soil dries out completely, it cracks—irregular fissures of all shapes and sizes appear. That striking scene left an unforgettable impression."
This memory is at the heart of ceramic artist Gaku Nakane’s signature technique, hibigesho (crackle glaze), which draws direct inspiration from nature. Depending on the type of clay used, the pattern and depth of the cracks vary dramatically.
As Nakane-san describes, he wanted to evoke the presence of natural stone—voluminous and grounded. The rugged surface, reminiscent of weathered rock, conveys a quiet sense of gravity and depth.
This piece can be enjoyed not only as a teacup, but also for serving sake.
