Toru Hatsuta / Susudake Chashaku B (Tea Scoop made of Smoked Bamboo)
Number: C02131
Artist: Toru Hatsuta
Area: Tokyo
Material: Bamboo
Size: Approx. 181 mm
This tea scoop (chashaku) is crafted from susudake — smoked bamboo that once supported thatched roofs since the Edo period.
While protecting people from the elements, these bamboo beams were continuously bathed in smoke from traditional irori (hearths) and kamado (stoves) over many decades.
The natural aging of the bamboo, characterized by the beautiful, variegated patterns formed by the original binding ropes and the uneven flow of smoke, lends the material an aesthetic quality reminiscent of a fine work of art.
