Size: Approx. Φ70 × H85 mm
Shiro Shimizu maintains his kiln at the foot of Mount Horai, near the shores of Lake Biwa.
Guided by his motto of digging his own clay rather than purchasing it, his work ranges from traditional tea tools to contemporary sculptural objects.
Each piece possesses a raw, compelling expression that feels as though it were dictated by the earth itself.
This tea caddy (chaire) possesses a powerful presence, as if the immense energy of the earth has been concentrated into a single, small vessel.
The raw clay, personally excavated by the artist, encounters the fire to create a one-of-a-kind landscape — scorched in some areas, while fused with melted ash in others.
From the fine grit of the earth felt at the fingertips to the rugged texture that evokes the intensity of the kiln’s flames, this piece radiates a quiet yet unmistakable vitality within the space of a tea ceremony.
Due to the handcrafted nature of these pieces, there may be individual variations in size, shape, glaze application, and color.
The actual product may differ slightly from the photographs.
