"Gentle Ceramics"

AMAHARE is pleased to announce our first exhibition of ceramic artist Manabu Kachi.
Visiting Mr. Kachi's studio in Hokkaido two years ago, we found a place filled with the expansive atmosphere typical of the northern land and his own gentle nature.

His diverse works include "Nanban" and "Kokuyu" (black glaze) born from the careful use of both wood and coal kilns,
unglazed "Porcelain" made from Kutani clay,
and primitive open-fired "Earthenware."

Reflecting his warm personality, these "Gentle Ceramics" seem to guide our daily lives toward a softer, more peaceful state.

We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

The Generosity of Utsuwa

It has already been two years since we traveled to Hokkaido to meet Mr. Kachi.

After driving for a few hours from New Chitose Airport, we finally arrived at his home and studio.

This is truly Hokkaido!
It is a place like a utopia, where wood-fired and coal-fired kilns stand side by side on vast land under a wide, open sky.

Mr. Kachi, his wife, his apprentice, and their beloved dog Hana welcomed us.
I still cannot forget the taste of the venison cutlets we had that evening.

Mr. Kachi is, above all, a man with a great, generous heart—much like a large utsuwa.
We spent such a warm time there, it felt like returning to our own hometown.

A Black with a Sense of Moisture

While there are many black utsuwa in the world, the moist, deep texture of Mr. Kachi's black glaze is truly unique.

It was ceramic artist Atsushi Funakushi who introduced Mr. Kachi to us.
Recently, we have had more opportunities for artists to introduce us to other artists, which brings us great joy.

I use Mr. Funakushi's black utsuwa alongside Mr. Kachi's black utsuwa at home,
they complement each other beautifully, and most importantly, they make the colors of the ingredients truly pop!

Nanban Yakishime

Nanban Yakishime can be called Mr. Kachi's signature work.
Perfect for enjoying a pleasant drink on a long autumn night while admiring the moon.

Gentle Ceramics

In recent years, he has been using Kutani porcelain clay from Ishikawa Prefecture for his porcelain works.

When I asked him why, he replied, "I hope to be of some help to the earthquake reconstruction efforts, even if only a little."

Yes, Mr. Kachi is a very, very gentle person.

It is precisely because he has this core of gentleness that I am captivated by his works, no matter what form of expression they take,
remembering that scenery in Hokkaido, I feel this deeply in my heart.

My expectations are swelling for this long-awaited exhibition at AMAHARE in Shirokanedai.

We look forward to welcoming you with the generous, large-hearted works of Mr. Kachi.
