Wataru Hatano began creating works primarily using Washi (Japanese paper) after completing his apprenticeship in papermaking in Ayabe, Kyoto—the home of "Kurotani Washi."
Driven by a profound desire for more people to discover the allure of Washi, he creates art and crafts while also proposing ways to incorporate Washi into interior spaces.
By layering Washi with natural materials such as soil and pigments, he creates an expression of profound depth that feels as if it has captured the very passage of time. The shadows and textures created by these overlapping materials shift in impression depending on the light and where they are placed, lending a quiet presence to the space.
This is a piece where the inherent warmth of Washi merges with a contemporary artistic sensibility. Whether as an accent for your room or integrated into either Japanese or Western-style interiors, these works blend in naturally and can be cherished for many years to come.
*Since the product is made of natural materials, please do not install it in a place where it will be extremely dry or exposed to direct sunlight. It may cause damage or discoloration.
Also it is possible to peel the surface off over time.
*The actual works are available for viewing at KYO AMAHARE.
