Wataru Hatano began creating works primarily using Washi (Japanese paper) after completing his apprenticeship in papermaking in Ayabe, Kyoto—the home of "Kurotani Washi."
Driven by a profound desire for more people to discover the allure of Washi, he creates art and crafts while also proposing ways to incorporate Washi into interior spaces.
By layering Washi with natural materials such as soil and pigments, he creates an expression of profound depth that feels as if it has captured the very passage of time.
The Japanese sensibility, which once naturally encompassed an awareness of one's own domain and the domains of others, has faded as modern life has become increasingly rationalized. In an era like this, Hatano-san expresses through his work the "Yohaku" (marginal spaces)—realms for conversing with and reflecting upon one's inner self, and the spaces reserved for those who bring something meaningful into our lives. He captures these conscious domains within his art.
