Toru Hatsuta / Susudake Tabi-Chashaku (Travel Tea Scoop made of Smoked Bamboo)
Number: C01896
Artist: Toru Hatsuta
Area: Tokyo
Material: Bamboo
Size: Approx. 120 mm
This tea scoop (chashaku) is carved from susudake — smoked bamboo that supported thatched roofs since the Edo period — resized into a compact form perfect for traveling.
Having protected generations from the elements while being seasoned by smoke from irori (hearths) and kamado (stoves), the bamboo bears a one-of-a-kind expression shaped by the imprints of binding ropes and the natural flow of smoke.
While preserving its art-like beauty, the scoop has been tailored to fit perfectly into tea baskets (chakago) or travel boxes (tabibako), offering the freedom to enjoy tea anywhere. Within this single, small piece that rests easily in the palm, the memories of bamboo nurtured over centuries are elegantly condensed.
Please note: As these items are handmade, each piece may vary in size, shape, and color, and may differ from the photos.
Care instructions: After use, do not wash with water. Gently wipe the item with a soft cloth or tissue paper. Store in the included box, avoiding high temperatures and humidity, to prevent the item from losing its original curvature.
