After training in traditional papermaking in Ayabe, Kyoto—the birthplace of Kurotani washi
Wataru Hatano began creating works using handmade washi as his primary medium.

Driven by a desire to share the beauty of washi with a wider audience,
he produces both art and craft,
while also exploring its applications in interior spaces.

Inspired by the forms of numbers and letters found in the paintings of American Abstract Expressionist Cy Twombly, Hatano began creating his “Calligraphy” series. Returning to the origins of kanji — characters that were once born from the shapes of things — he liberates his brushwork from conventional notions of legibility and compositional beauty. The character “山” (mountain) thus emerges as a universal landscape deeply rooted in the Japanese spirit, quietly watching over us like a timeless guardian.
