Captivated by Karatsu ware since childhood, Yukiko Tsuchiya trained as a disciple under master Takashi Nakazato at his kiln in Hamatama, Karatsu City, later establishing her own kiln, Yukiko Kiln. Her work embodies traditional Karatsu techniques, enriched by her unique artistry, making it highly valued in Japanese cuisine, especially for tea ceremonies and kaiseki dining.

Tsuchiya’s approach is deeply connected to daily use; each piece is crafted to harmonize naturally with the dining table. Her process involves a continual cycle of making and using, creating tableware that blends rugged strength with delicate feminine detail. This balance, along with the rustic texture of her clay, beautifully captures the essence of Karatsu ware.

Her black Karatsu pieces, in particular, are known for their individuality—no two are exactly alike even with the same glaze—and bring a warmth that complements any dish. Since her first solo exhibition, her matte black Karatsu ware has garnered high praise, standing out with its vibrant, distinctive character among the works of other artisans. Tsuchiya’s pieces are both practical and a joy to use, inviting creativity in plating and enhancing the dining experience.
